Collection Overview

Title:

Fisher-Merriam family photographs
Fisher Merriam family photographs

Abstract:

Collection contains mostly portrait and snapshot photographs relating to members of the Fisher and Merriam families of California and Massachusetts. Individuals represented include Galen Merriam Fisher, Ralph Talcott Fisher, Sr., Margaret Merriam Fisher, Grace Fisher Richards, and Leonard C. Fisher (and portraits of his U.C. Berkeley class of 1881.) The collection also includes photographs of, or taken in, the California locales of Saratoga, Berkeley, San Francisco, Trinity County, Pacific Grove, and Ventura, among others. Carton 4 contains noteworthy camping and mountain landscape views dating from the 1880s to about 1900 which include Yosemite Valley (3 by C.E. Watkins, ca. 1880), Calaveras Big Trees, Echo Lake, Lake Tahoe (4 by R.J. Waters, ca. 1890), and Glen Alpine. Among a set of Yosemite excursion views, pioneers John Chaffee and Jason Chamberlain are pictured, presumably outside their Big Oak Flat home. Another Yosemite view pictures several Native Americans seated near an acorn cache.
